Presently the two most popular methods of sterilization for women are- Tubal Ligation and Essure. Tubal Ligation is also known popularly as getting your tubes tied. It is a birth control measure where the fallopian tubes of a woman are either tied, burned, cut or blocked with the help of bands, clips or rings. In normal conditions fallopian tube acts as the transporter which makes meeting of the egg or ovum of  a women with the sperm cells of a man possible. As regards the cause of ectopic pregnancy there is no conclusive evidence. But still  the medical community has found that in many cases damage to the fallopian tubes is done by some sexually transmitted diseases.

Regarding the procedure used in Essure it is very different from the traditional methods of sterilization. Here is no cutting or tying up of the fallopian tubes is involved.  Instead specially trained doctors in Essure insert a spring like coil through the natural pathways of a human body like the cervix, uterus and vagina into the fallopian tubes. The spring like coils are referred to as micro inserts.

These micro inserts are designed in such a way that they favor the growth f tissues in and around the area of coils. Thus over a period of 3 months there are enough tissues in that area so that it can prevent or block sperms of men from reaching the fallopian tubes of a woman. And thus defers all possibilities of pregnant.

Unlike other methods of sterilization anesthesia is not used here. After the procedure is performed, the doctor calls the patient for a test called hysterosalpingogram. This test is done to confirm whether or not occlusion is there in the fallopian tubes of the woman. In around 96 percent of the cases occlusion occurs after the first 3 months of the making of micro inserts whereas in the rest of the cases occlusion occurs in the remaining 7 months. Also another important thing that you need to remember is that during the first three months till there is complete blockage of the fallopian tubes the patient needs to use other methods of birth control.

In fact there is other alternative to reversal of sterilization- IVF or In Vitro Fertilization. But this procedure is also a costly one. So the most important thing here is that women before going for sterilization should always make a deep and serious thought whether they should go for it or not.
